My IBM i customer is  considering how to migrate from old Flash Storage  to new Flash Systems storage.

The QA in the link below states that it is possible to migrate storage using STRASPBAL.
    https://community.ibm.com/community/user/power/discussion/is-flashsystems-migration-function-available-when-only-storage-is-being-migrated#

However, my customer has a single 150 GB LUN containing the load source and data.
There are about 30 IBM i partitions.
The migration method using STRASPBAL seems to assume that the load source and data are on separate LUNs.
Can I still use the STRASPBAL method in that case?

    Dear Sawada-san

STRASPBAL is used only when there are more than one disk unit in each IBM i LPAR and it applies to non-LSU (load source unit) disk unit(s).

From your post, my understanding is that in all those 30 IBM i LPARs, there is only one LUN (of 150 GB size) in each LPAR.   If you confirm my understanding, then you migrate the disk only with copy load source operation.  (The new LSU unit must NOT be smaller than the current LSU).  You do this by IPLing IBM i LPAR in MANUAL mode and use the DST menu 3. Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) --> 4. Work with disk units --> 2. Work with disk unit recovery --> 9. Copy disk unit data.

We migrate LUN's with the 'Remote Copy' function in the Storwize/Flashsystem.
So the migration is on Storwize level, not on IBMi level.

    Dear Satid

    Dear haken

    Thanks a lot.

I understand that migration is possible by copying with DST or FLASHCOPY of storage.
I will discuss which method to migrate with the customer.

Hello Hidetoshi, the best option is to used the system migration, that is a solution that works with FlashSystems family. Another way to do this is making a replication between both storages and let the last portion of the data to be replicated with the source disks off.
