How get IDz VU license from ADFz 5655-AC6?

  • 1.  How get IDz VU license from ADFz 5655-AC6?

    Posted Thu February 03, 2022 04:05 PM

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/how-resolve-idz-ee-license-expiry-message says:

How to resolve IDz EE license expiry message

    Objective

The IDz and IDzEE client downloads from the Aqua web site are the exact same, they come pre-configured with a 90-day trial license. However, IDz uses either an Authorized user activation kit which are applied to each workstation, or a Floating license through a License Key Server.

However, IDzEE does not use either of those licenses.  IDz EE requires that the host be configured as either an IDz EE or ADFz host.  The following topics in the host configuration guide for PARMLIB registration and SMF record collection provide the necessary information for the host configuration:

This way a user only needs to connect to an ADFz or IDz EE enabled host once every 30 days in order to use the value add features in the client.  If for some reason they do not connect to the host for more than 30 days they will see a license expired message in the client when they try and use some of it's features.   All they need to do is reconnect to an ADFz or IDz EE registered host and they will no longer see the license expiry message.

The first link says  5655-AC6 must be in IFAPRDxx, and the second says that SMF type 122 records (for "SYS") must be captured.

As best I can tell, I've met the requirements.  But my IDz client still says
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?   I've been told that the IDz client isn't provided with the RDP program.  But I've also been told (by an IBMer presenter at SHARE whom I really wish I'd collected contact info!) that 5655-AC6 provides the licenses.

    Thanks for your help.!

    Posted Thu February 03, 2022 04:54 PM

    Hello,

in your list of registered products I do see ADFz:

    E IBM CORP IBM APP DLIV FND * * .* .* 5655-AC6

Application Delivery Foundation for z/OS (ADFz) is a bundle of application development and delivery tools in a single solution.  It includes IBM Developer for z/OS Enterprise Edition, Fault Analyzer for z/OS, File Manager for z/OS and Application Performance Analyzer for z/OS.   For more details please see the announcement letter from October 2021 - https://www.ibm.com/common/ssi/ShowDoc.wss?docURL=/common/ssi/rep_sm/6/897/ENUS5655-AC6/index.html

Unfortunately we cannot update the Manage License view, that you have shown in your post, with information about the VU license.  That view will only show authorized user license status.  Yours shows trial, and eventually that trial license will expire.  For companies like yours that use IDzEE and ADFz, there is no issue even when that trial license expires, as long as you use the Remote Systems Explorer (RSE) to connect to a VU based host registered for IDzEE or ADFz then all is well.

Something we added in March 2020 (IDz v14.2.2) is an update to the Properties view. So if you click on MVS Files for a connection in your RSE view you can see if your VU license is active (meaning it is within the 30 days) or expired (meaning you haven't connected in 30 days) and how your host is registered (ADFz, IDzEE, etc).

Wow William, I was hoping to get an answer some day-thanks for responding so quickly.

I'd seen something on the web about right click/properties on "MVS Files" earlier today, but my 14.2.5 IDz properties don't seem to have that license information:

I don't guess I need to know, as long as I can continue using IDz after March 1.

Would it be ok for me to post your reply in a couple of other places?  I asked in a "Development and Pipeline" forum.  But the thing that got me started on this again today was a post in an ISV forum where he was told DTSC didn't provide the IDz license this morning.  (And now that it isn't needed if IDz EE is in the  D PROD,STATE list.  But is it really "E IBM CORP         IBM APP DLIV FND *                * .* .*  5655-AC6   " that he needs?  Or do I need something with "IDz EE"?

Sorry that my previous answer was not clear.   First find the Properties view in the IDz workbench, by default it is in the lower left.  Then in the RSE view select MVS Files and the Properties view should update with pertinent information, including VU license status and offering.

The PARMLIB registration should be for whichever product your company has purchased.  Both IDzEE and ADFz can be purchased separately, and both are VU products and therefore your IDz client will be happy to see either entry.

As for sharing the information in my reply, I am not familiar with the ISV Forum but go ahead if you believe it will be helpful for others.  My responses are already visible in the Development and Pipeline discussion forum.

I'm sure it's just me that not clear William!   In the Properties tab, it shows:

That doesn't give me warm fuzzies.  Am I ok?

Nope that is not good.  It appears to me that your sys prog has installed and configured IBM Explorer for z/OS on the host since that server level is 3.2.0.17, and it is a pre-req for the z/OS Explorer Extensions (a.k.a. - IDz Server).   If the z/OS Explorer Extensions was installed and configured properly then the server level would be 14.2 or 15.0 or something like that.  And the two VU fields would have applicable information.   I would suggest having your systems programmer review the Host Configuration Guide https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/developer-for-zos/14.2.0?topic=configuration-developer-zos-host-guide and/or open a support case with IBM as it is easy for them to review environment configuration files, logs and provide any guidance. https://www.ibm.com/mysupport

    Hi Bill,

Wendell reach out to me and I shared the following with him, and he suggested adding it here as it can benefit others:
    ---
I see your screenshot shows VU License and VU Oferring "Not available". This might happen when the VUCheck routine is not found on the host, and the cause is usually a misconfiguration related to the z/OS Explorer Extensions component (zee).

If you installed the zee component on /usr/lpp/IBM/zee for example, there's a new variable that must be added to your /etc/zexpl/rse.env so the base z/OS Explorer can find the zee component. For example:
    RSE_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lpp/IBM/zee

If this variable is not present on your rse.env, add it and recycle the RSED started task.
    ---

Wendell can give more details but I believe this solved the issue.

    Thank you William & William!

/etc/zexpl/rse.env as distributed with the z/OS 2.5 RDP in had no value for RSE_PLUGIN_PATH.  In fact, it had no values for anything--the entire file had "#" at the first of each non-blank record.

Once I added RSE_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lpp/IBM/zee, recycled RSED, and re-connected IDz the "MVS Files" property tab now shows:

Thanks again for all your help!

Glad to hear everything is now up and running as expected.   In case anyone reading this wonders where this is documented, check this section of the Host Configuration Guide: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/developer-for-zos/15.0.0?topic=customization-rseenv-zos-explorer-configuration-file

I know this thread is stale, but I'm not sure where else to go.

I'm now connecting to z/OS 3.1 using IDz 16.04.  I've edited /etc/zexpl/rse.env (in EBCDIC), coded "RSE_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lpp/IBM/zee", and recycled both RSED and IDz.

But I still see "Expired" next to "VU License".

The only other item in the rse.env file other than comments is "JAVA_HOME=/usr/lpp/java/J11.0_64".   This appears to be ok:

    WRL1:/usr/lpp/java/J11.0_64/bin: >javac -version
    javac 11.0.22

Is there something else I need to do now?

    Thanks again for your help.

Hi Wendell,  this does seem like like a malfunction as you are licensed for Application Delivery Foundation for z/OS, so the license should not expire.  It could be a simple connection setting or a set-up issue.  The best thing to do is open a support case so the root cause is correctly identified.  I hope you are able to open one.  Thank you for posting.

Hi Wendell, if you would like to do some research, these links my be helpful.
    - RSED can find IDz, https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/developer-for-zos/16.0?topic=customization-rseenv-zos-explorer-configuration-file
    - Register as ADFz or IDzEE, https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/developer-for-zos/16.0?topic=changes-product-enablement-in-ifaprdxx
    - Write SMF type 122 records to track provisioning of activation codes, https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/developer-for-zos/16.0?topic=changes-smf-record-collection-in-smfprmxx

Joy, I'm embarrased to say that I just didn't have the right product code in IFAPRD00.  My status is "Active" now.

As the link you shared pointed out, the number is 5755-A01 now, not the one I was using in 2022.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi Wendell,

I think you have an issue with your product registration. For IDz EE v16 and ADFz v4.0.0, the respective product registration should be program number 5755-A05 for IBM Developer for z/OS Enterprise Edition and program number 5755-A01 IBM Application Delivery Foundation for z Systems. Refer to this section
