You cannot log on at this time. The console is still initializing and is not yet ready for users to login. Allow the console to finish initializing and then try to login again.
The screen attached to the HMC says the same thing.
This is over a period of hours. I assume I will need to power off and on to try to get the HMC to respond, but before I do I is there a likely cause for this?
Is there a way of diagnosing this?

No other issues with a hard power recycle than you'd normally expect on a server/PC. It's possible you'll corrupt a filesystem but linux will fsck them as it comes up.

You may be able to get to a console using CTRL-ALT-1, or CTRL-ALT-10, but if memory serves, they're console output and you can't log in that way, it's been a while. Of course, those may show you what's going on.

Do you have the profile data backed up to DVD?

If the HMC won't boot far enough to fix it from command line then raise a PMR and IBM wll let you know where to download the fix CD ISO. The HMC checks for HMC update CDs on boot and this CD / ISO has the HMC update flag set and then runs a small script to clear down the log files for you.
