If you have the CD/DVD control in the Logical Partition (LPAR) with HMC then create a virtual Console from the HMC (I assume here you have defined a valid LPAR with physical or virtual network and physical or virtual disks)
Then start the machine (insert power and if necessary press the tiny white or blue button)) or for the LPAR start it via the HMC
-
when it outputs a line of resources it has configured including "keyboard" hit 1
-
this takes you to the SMS menu
-
insert the AIX first CD/DVD into the drive
-
then follow the menu to boot from CD/DVD
-
follow the menu and start the install process
If you have an LPAR but no physical CD/DVD adapter that can be assigned you can use the virtual optical device (assuming a recent VIOS) - see the documentation for that.
One further method is using the AIX Network Installation Manager (NIM) - go read the NIM Redbook.
Hope this helps, but I do realise the first time user is facing many options and many situations depending on the configuration of the POWER machine you have, ta Nigel Griffiths
