Implementations of the MQTT protocol are being used in many projects around the world. For example, in smart meters for utility companies, in healthcare projects and in traffic monitoring solutions for cities. The protocol itself is "open", available for anyone to implement. Facebook, for example, has used an implementation for its messaging component. See mqtt.org for more information on the protocol, use cases and adopters.
