gradstudent - SOS - my macbook stopped launching SPSS Statistics - #SPSS Statistics

    Hello SPSS Statistics Community -

I'm a graduate student with zero experience with SPSS. At the start of this semester (for about 2 weeks), SPSS worked fine on my machine, a 2020 Macbook Pro (currently running OS Ventura 13.6). And then one day when I went to launch/open the application, it wouldn't open successfully. When I open SPSS Statistics, the icon bounces and it seems like the application is opening. At almost the same time, an icon for Java opens. Shortly after that, SPSS closes as though it was never opened and the Java icon turns into a black rectangle that has "exec" in small green letters in the upper left. The icon looks like this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254644568) and says "java" when I hover over it.

I was given a SPSS Statistics license through my university, so I don't have the purchasing/license information.

I've tried checking the forums here and YouTube and haven't found an issue like mine. My professor and classmates have tried to help too, but we're all stumped. I tried uninstalling SPSS Statistics and Java, downloading the latest version of Java and reinstalling it, reinstalling SPSS Statistics, and updating my OS (there's now a newer OS update available, Sonoma 14) but the issue persists.

I'm really struggling and would very, very much appreciate some help.

    Thank you for your time,

    - Jenna

    Hi @Jenna Parlato

The behavior you are describing does not sound like one I associate with macOS 13.6 (Ventura).  Certainly, if you have updated to macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) then it makes sense you would see the application crash almost immediately after launch.  macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) was not originally a supported platform for IBM SPSS Statistics.  If you have version 29.0.0.0, 29.0.1.0, or 29.0.1.1 installed, there is now an Interim Fix available to allow those version to run on Sonoma. See Known Issue DT243265

For a clean reinstallation of your IBM SPSS Statistics, I'd suggest this Technote

    Hello,

I am having the same issue as the original poster. I have Mac OS Ventura 13.6 and I am unable to launch SPSS v28. I also received the license through my university. The SPSS application will attempt to launch but then fail and the SPSS icon disappears. The prior spss v25 application worked fine and I had uninstalled it and emptied my trash.

    Please advise!
