my Review: IBM MaaS360
I've been using IBM MaaS360 at my company for over a year now to manage both company-issued and personal (BYOD) devices, and overall, I'd say it does the job pretty well-though it's not without its quirks.
What I Like:
-
Device Coverage Is Solid: We have a mix of Androids, iPhones, Windows laptops, and even a few Macs, and MaaS360 handles all of them in one place. That's been a huge time-saver for our IT team.
-
Security Features Give Peace of Mind: We can remotely wipe lost devices, enforce encryption, and block access to sensitive apps if something seems off. There are also location-based controls, which we use for traveling employees.
-
The Watson Insights Are Cool: It flags risky behavior or unusual usage patterns, so we can catch problems before they become big issues. It's kind of like having a second pair of (very smart) eyes.
-
Cloud-Based Management: Since it's all in the cloud, I can manage everything from my laptop or phone without needing to be in the office or VPN'ed in.
What I Don't Love:
-
Clunky Interface: The dashboard feels a little dated, and some settings are buried in menus that aren't super intuitive. I've had to look up how to do basic tasks more than once.
-
Initial Setup Was a Bit of a Learning Curve: There are a lot of options-and while that's great for customization, it took a while to figure out the best setup for our needs.
-
Occasional Lag: When pushing updates or policies to large groups of devices, it sometimes takes longer than expected. Not a dealbreaker, just something to be aware of.
-
Pricing: It's not cheap. Probably better suited for medium to large businesses with real security concerns rather than smaller shops.
Bottom Line:
If you're looking for a secure, all-in-one solution to manage mobile and desktop devices-especially in a company where data protection matters-MaaS360 is a solid option. It's powerful and flexible, though you might need to invest a bit of time learning how to make the most of it.
