  • 1.  Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) - Test of Model Effects; and Bar Plotting with offsets

    Posted Wed July 03, 2024 01:23 PM

    Dear IBM SPSS Statistics Community,

I am using Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) to model the effects of some predictors on count data. When reading about the GENLIN function, and specifically the GEE documentation (Page 44 of the IBM SPSS Advanced Statistics 28 Manual: IBM SPSS Statistics 28 Documentation) it is said under the Print option (after Goodness of Fit Statistics and before Parameter Estimates):

"Model summary statistics. Displays model fit tests, including likelihood-ratio statistics for the model fit omnibus test and statistics for the Type I or III contrasts for each effect."

However, in my SPSS Output, after the Goodness of Fit Statistics table and before the Parameter Estimates table, I have instead one table titled 'Tests of Model Effects'. I assume they are the same thing just named differently between documentation and actual SPSS Output, but I am just reaching out to the SPSS community to double check.

Therefore my question is, is Tests of Model Effects table of my SPSS Output the one that displays model fit tests, including likelihood-ratio statistics for the model fit omnibus test and statistics for the Type I or III contrasts for each effect?

Additionally, because I am testing the effects of categorical predictors on count data, which I am modelling using GEEs with a Poisson distribution and with offsets log-transformed to factor the different expositions, do you have any recommendations on how to bar plot this count data with offsets?

    Thank you so much

    Hello IBM SPSS Statistics Community,

Replying to my post in hopes of creating more visibility towards my questions. It would be great to have a reply.

    Thank you so much

Have you gone through the case study for GEE?  You can find it here

    Hello Jon,

Yes, I have! And curiously it jumps from the Goodness of Fit table to the Parameter Estimates, making no comments about the Tests of Model Effects (or Model summary statistics), thus leaving my question unanswered. It also makes no observations regarding plotting from Estimated Marginal Means from GEE models with offset terms.

    Thank you,
