What you described seeing is an example of typical behavior of /var when you have many spooled printers configured on your system. When you have many highly active spooled printers there can be many files created which uses of course disk space but also remember there is an inode per file. When the print jobs are done of course all those files are gone and inodes are given back to the OS.

I have personally had /var/spool blow out my /var filesystem due to print jobs that built up and the inodes ran out before the disk space ran out which hung all the printers among other things.

    Hope that helps.
    Good luck.
