  • 1.  Firmware Upgrade Issues from V2018.4.1.x to V10.5.0.x

    Posted Thu April 27, 2023 12:33 PM

    Hi all,

Have you all migrated to latest datapower firmware for Virtual Datapowers?

Have you faced any specific issues during firmware upgrade from V2018.4.1 to V10.5.0?

We are planning for this upgrade and I was curious to know if any specific issues observed specifically with ciphers, MQ integrations, networks etc or any other sort.

We have IBM DataPower Gateway Virtual Edition VMWare Non-Production/Production V2018.4.1.20 (5725-T09)

    Thanks !

We went from 10.0.1.9 to 10.5.0.? (something other than 0).   This was a sandbox only and not used for API Connect.  It was more of a brick test than a real upgrade, but haven't noticed any problems.

Seems like quite a jump for you though.  You might want to pass it by IBM first, most especially if API Connect is involved.

I think V10.0.1.9 is required before upgrading to V10.5.0.x.  We have installed V10.5.0.4 on 2 physical appliances and 2 virtual without any problems.  We did have to reboot using the resizer tool before the virtual's would update.

Thanks John ! Resizer tool - you mean temporary space allocation from IBM for your firmware upgrade on virtual appliance ?

Do we need to install any tool for that or IBM can simply increase the space for us ?

    Thanks !

Yes, the resizer tool does allocate more temporary space to install the scrypt4 file.

And yes, virtuals can be upgraded to 10.5 directly as per latest updates from IBM on PMR (Provided some criterias are met)

Then maybe it's just for the physical appliance.  I know for our 8441 model we got an error message when we tried to jump to 10.0.5.4 that 10.0.1.9 or later was required.

    Hi Joseph,

We are not using API Connect. The upgrade is possible as IBM mentioned in latest PMR. However, I want a cautious approach here as the end of support for v2018 is April 30th.

What are your suggestions on such major upgrades? Can we upgrade after the end of support as well if no perticular requirement of upgrade from security/new config perspective?

    Thanks !

You said you're on VM's.  Just snapshot what you have and try an in-place FW upgrade during a maintenance window and verify the upgrade.  Or, snapshot what you have, bring up a new identical VM in a network bubble and try it there.

Either way, with VM's, you only need secure backups out of extra caution.
