Could you please advise on the best way to housekeep AIX filesystems please? For example, searching for the largest file, what is the most effective way to find the largest file. Extending the filesystem, how to check how much space is available to extend, and adding more disk to a filesystem and extending into it. The best way to detect or identify core dumps. And any other useful, general housekeeping tasks that you would recommend on the iSeries.

    Many thanks in advance

This can find all large files for example.

Also use the 'du -k' command to look at the size of directories in Kbytes.
Use 'df -k' to see LV sizes and free space in Kbytes.

lspv hdisk0 will tell you how much space is in the physical volume unused.

    chfs -a size=+100000 /tmp

Will extend in increments that you specify. Error quickly tells you if there is not enough space.

Find can also be used to find core files since they have the word core in them.

    1. chfs -a "size=+100000" /opt
    Filesystem size changed to 638976

    1. df -k /opt
Filesystem 1024-blocks Free %Used Iused %Iused Mounted on
    /dev/hd10opt 319488 55364 83% 4396 26% /opt

So you can see how this increased the space.
