I'm on 8.1 and had upgraded from 7.6. To do so, we didn't "import" the type trees, we just opened the mtt files from the 8.1 Type Tree designer, analyzed and saved. That was is it. We didn't open Type tree designer and "import". If you're still have trouble, there must be something in the documentation about what to do, or someone else here will know.

The format of the mts file is changing from version to version. What is changing? The importer expects Linefeeds after certain XML tags and this is different in several versions.

I already opened a PMR, because we wanted to Import an mts-file from Gefeg. IBM told me, that you cannot rely on the DTD, but they don't have another documentation.
