TBH, I pretty much love this site. It's clean and easy to use. There is a tremendous amount of content and a large group of people who care about what they do. It's a rather welcoming community.
The idea of gamification isn't exactly new. Rewarding people for behavior seems trivial, but is a core concept in motivation. And it's basically free to give people points for doing stuff. I mean, it's not a raise, it's just fake badges.
But it works. And good design can seriously shape user behavior. For you Apptio folks, I'm preaching to the choir. Ya'll have obviously bought into using it to drive participation in this community. And as far as it's been taken, there's still some room for growth.
- Additional badges for meeting certain metrics
- Create 25/50/100 of something
- Take all of the training courses
- Get 100 on the test the first time (I did not)
- Give them sick names, like "Cheese Grater", "Scorpion","Gaper/Jerry"; make lots of 80's pop culture references
- Bring gamification to the Apptio product
- Can be granted by TBMAs or by hitting metrics
- Drive user adoption and exploration of the product
- Encourage healthy competition between users to leverage the platform
- Push TBMAs to produce the most effective content
I'm far more serious about point number 2. This product created an entire business space. It's the proverbial "killer app" and it's value is so obvious that adoption is pretty much guaranteed. You (Apptio) know which squeezes produce the most efficient juice. Throw down some breadcrumbs - badges, points, whatever, to lead us the right way. And let's keep enjoying the journey. Thanks for your time.
