Hi Friends,
I haven't been into the Spatial for decades, and to be sincere, would need some memory refreshing on it. It has been hard to find relevant doc starting from high level to low level, even in the IIUG presentations ( I may miss some though).
With a traditional ERP application, we have addresses in a number of tables, formatted as addresses are always formatted, that number and Street name, city, post code , country or close to that.
As you know and have seen, today general technology goes way beyond that. one can calculate routes, check distance, locate an address etc. The most visible tool for that is Google Maps and its API.
Informix has Spatial that, AFAIK, can also help a lot here. My memory says one can easily calculate the distance between 2 POINTS, but this is 'absolute distance' and not distance on the road. So one of the questions is 'can Informix Spatial datablade know the roads from one point to the other, which many times is not a mere line between 2 points... If yes, how can this be achieved?
And more in general, what would be the Pro"s and Con's between using Google Maps API as opposed to using IFMX Spatial datablade?
THanks, as always
Eric
