We don't use the full set of capabilities, i.e. we don't promote the data. We use it instead for simulation exercises:
We have a report that displays the number of servers related to an application. One column allows the application owner to enter a new number of servers, and the report will calculate the new monthly cost.
Apptio keeps the data (in PRD), but it updates nothing, nor does it trigger any calculation jobs.
For our use case, data is volatile, so we don't have to run it to the process as described by @Michael Enslein.
