What people commonly refer to with "5010" is a set of healthcare transactions covered under the latest HIPAA requirements.
There are so many levels to answer your question I'll try for a techie version and hope I hit the ball home:
Here is a US Government depiction of 5010:
http://www.cms.hhs.gov/ElectronicBillingEDITrans/01_Overview.asp The actual message changes are minute for techies -- it is all of the business behind it that can make it hard for everyone.
Payers will have to take more than one version during a cutover period.
5010 lays the groundwork for ICD-10 which is a monster (Europe and other parts of the world are already doing ICD-10 )
People are pushing for these transactions to move from batch to real time.
The 837 Claim, included in the HIPAA 5010 requirements, is amazingly complex in form and even more so in the business rules that work over, through, and underneath it.
The groups doing most of the work are Hospitals/Large Practices, Clearinghouses, and Health Insurance Companies (including US Govt).
