You also might want to look at the device address used by hdisk0 and hdisk1, because there is no guarentee that either OS or the install media would assign the same name to hdisk0 & hdisk1 (for example, if you do a

    lsdev -C c disk
    one AIX instance may display:
hdisk0 Available 10-80-00-2,0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive
hdisk1 Available 10-80-00-4,0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive

while the other AIX instance (or the installation) may display:
hdisk1 Available 10-80-00-2,0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive
hdisk0 Available 10-80-00-4,0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive

It is generally pretty deterministic for simple disk
configurations, but it could be different in some cases.

If that happened, you could have accidentally overwritten
the AIX 5.3 disk with the AIX 5.2 installation.

    1. Boot into maintenance mode using 5.3 media and import the rootvg on hdisk0 (filesystems mounted)

    2. bosboot -ad /dev/hdisk0

    3. reboot

    fileset = bos.alt_disk_install.rte
    smitty alt_install

With this solution, you can wake up ( import ) a rootvg from your AIX 5.2 hdisk into your current AIX 5.3 environment.

    Best regards ...

    Thank you for your answer!
I am pretty new in AIX :(

When i make smitty alt_install i get this:

Move cursor to desired item and press Enter.

Install mksysb on an Alternate Disk
Clone the rootvg to an Alternate Disk
    NIM Alternate Disk Migration

Which option do i have to select to make my machine dual boot?
Right now i got 5.3 installed on hdisk1

    active
    hdisk1 0005104d719de3ce None
    On 5.3 system i see:
    #lspv
    hdisk0 0005104d719de3ce None
    hdisk1 005b9f3f2fcf2767 rootvg
    active
I am in 5.3 and i can boot in 5.2 with:
    1. bootlist -m normal hdisk0
    #shutdown -Fr
But when i want to boot from 5.2 to 5.3 with command:
    #bootlist -m normal hdisk1
I get "No operating system installed"
    :((
I ve installed new and clean install for both systems.
For 5.2 i ve selected just one disk (hdisk0) and for 5.3 also just one
    disk (hdisk1)

Can anyone tell me where the problem lies?

    Just for info:
(On console) I can go to maintanance mode with 5.3 CD inserted ... import volume group (rootvg) and do:

    #bosboot -ad /dev/hdisk1

    After that i change:
    bootlist -m normal hdisk1
Reboot and i CAN login to 5.3 ...but after that when i reboot into 5.2
again cannot reboot into 5.3 "!@#!@#!@# I get the same note like i said above
    "No operating system installed"
    WTF!!!

I expect that you have installed both versions on the same disk (i.e you overwrote the first installation when you installed the second OS level).

To verify, run oslevel -r each time you boot the machine.

To make sure you install each version of AIX on a differnet disk, verify the location codes of the disks during the installation.
