  • 1.  Does Traditional WebSphere 9 support Java 11?

    Posted Wed July 22, 2020 11:42 PM

We are looking into installing WebSphere 9.0.5 (Traditional) and we are interested in using Java 11 so we can leverage OpenJDK

We found link below that mentions WAS (base) 9.0.5 includes support for Java SE 11

    https://www.ibm.com/cloud/blog/announcements/websphere-v905-whats-new-faq

However, any documentation we have found on this, references Liberty and not traditional WebSphere

Can we get a confirmation this is supported?

As of now the support for Java 11 is strictly with WebSphere Liberty. Java 11 is not supported on Traditional WebSphere. The page you are referencing is mentioning WebSphere in general terms as an umbrella. WebSphere (base) includes tWAS and Liberty.

If you are interested in Java 11, WebSphere Liberty is the way to go.

You can find more FAQs on the support of Java and WebSphere on the link below:

Is there any plan to support Java EE 8 on WebSphere traditional in the near future? My customers have been on WAS traditional since 5.x and while they and we would like to move to a more modern Java EE 8 / Java 11 platform I don't think the chances of them being willing to move from Traditional to Liberty are very strong.
