  • 1.  Do you know if IER can pick up different languages in the same document?

    Good evening,

I am an EPH here and want to know a bit about Enterprise Records for a team client. Does anyone know if IER can detect different languages within the same document? Sifting through documentation, I can't find an example of the product doing so. Thank you so much for your time.

    HI John,

To my knowledge, IER is not language-aware and does not natively have this feature. It would be fairly trivial to create an event action to call a cloud service that could identify the language(s) inside a document, though (most translation services, including IBM's, are capable of this).

I am curious what the use-case is, I've not seen language be a driver for retention policy before, but maybe you're using it as a proxy for country?

    Best,

    Eric

Thank you so much Eric, the use case is that we're responding to a team that is based out of the County directly bordering Mexico. We're not sure what type of documents they are receiving and want to make sure we're highlighting a capability the client might not be aware they need (abstracting English and Spanish out of 1 singular document). I do know that IER yields a single language property for documents, but I believe a single language is all it's capable of determining. Let me know what you think and thanks again for the reply!

    Best,

    John

    Hi John,

AFAIK that property is not automatically populated, the user needs to specify the language, or you'd need to build some automation to populate it.

I have not seen a use case for multi-language support with IER since IER is based more on the property fields of the document/record.  If you are running IBM Content Search Services with FileNet you can index the content of the documents with multiple languages so when the end user executes a content based search they can retrieve the results sets for the documents within ICN.

    Hope that helps....Don Henig
