  • 1.  Do Fix Packs contain the security patches from CSUs?

    Posted Tue March 07, 2023 05:17 AM

    Hey there,

we'd like to get a defintive answer to the following question:

Do Fix Packs contain the content of the CSUs?

E.g. does the Fix Pack 9.3.0.4 contain everything from prior CSUs like 9.3.0.1, 9.3.0.2 etc.?

The official documentation is a bit weird Changes to IBM MQ's maintenance delivery model as it does not specifically mention this, only that the latest of each has all prior versions in it.

    Kind regards

    Hello Sebastian,

After reading the documentation, I understood that yes, a CSU includes all the previous fixes.

Another way to check is to look at the file size:

    • 9.3.0-IBM-MQ-LinuxX64-FP0001.tar.gz : 448 537 Ko
    • 9.3.0-IBM-MQ-LinuxX64-FP0002.tar.gz : 505 944 Ko
    • 9.3.0-IBM-MQ-LinuxX64-FP0003.tar.gz : 506 139 Ko
    • 9.3.0-IBM-MQ-LinuxX64-FP0004.tar.gz : 506 139 Ko

The size increases with the fix number, so FP0004 most probably includes FP0003, which includes FP0002 ...

    HTH, LMD.

    Hey Luc-Michel,

we also believe it is that way, we were just hoping for an official statement somewhere that we have overlooked, since the documentation is a wee bit imprecise.

    Hi Sebastian,

I agree with @Luc-Michel Demey and I believe the text in the link you provided contains a definitive answer thus:-

Does CSU maintenance contain older fixes?

Yes, maintenance deliverables are always cumulative for the release, so applying the latest maintenance level also addresses issues fixed in earlier maintenance for that release, regardless of whether the latest maintenance is a fix pack or CSU.

You actually asked the question the other way around - you asked, "Does a fixpack contain older CSUs?". I believe the next question on the page answers that:-

Do CSUs and fix packs need to be applied sequentially?

No, maintenance deliverables are always cumulative for the release, so applying the latest maintenance level also addresses issues fixed in earlier maintenance for that release, regardless of whether the latest maintenance is a fix pack or CSU. There is no need to apply intermediate maintenance levels before applying the latest maintenance.

Specifically where it says "maintenance deliveries are always cumulative ... regardless of whether the latest maintenance is a fix pack or CSU". Both Fix packs and CSUs are "maintenance deliveries".

So, YES, Fix Pack 9.3.0.4 does contain everything from prior CSUs like 9.3.0.1, 9.3.0.2.

    Cheers,
    Morag

    Hey Morag,

yeah, we also believe that, we just wanted another look on the topic to be sure.

I think you pointed me to the right thing here with "..Both Fix packs and CSUs are "maintenance deliveries"

It would also be very strange to be not the case or you'd have people constantly installing CSUs and fix packs.

Thanks for all the answers πŸ‘
