We have a DS4800 and a p5-570. We configured 2 AIX 5.2 servers, 2 VIO servers, and several AIX 5.3 clients servers via the VIOs. We only had 4 Fibre Cards, so we direct attached to the DS4800 as below:
Controller A
Slot 1 VIO Server 1
Slot 2 Server 1 (one of the AIX 5.2)
Controller B
Slot 1 Server 2 (the other AIX 5.2)
Slot 2 VIO Server 2
We now have 2 more Fiber Cards. We want to assign one each to the 2 AIX 5.2 servers to provided redundant direct connections. What is the best approach to accomplish this? We realize now that we should have left the redundant controller's slot open for each of our servers, but it's too late now. Would the following process work?
Step 1 Shutdown all servers
Step 2 Establish a second Server 1 direct connection to Controller B slot 3
Establish a second Server 2 direct connection to Controller A slot 4
Step 3 Reboot all servers (let them discover new connections)
Step 4 Shutdown all servers
Step 5 Move first Server 1 direct connection from Cntrl A slot 1 to slot 3
Move first Server 2 direct connection from Cntrl B slot 1 to slot 4
Step 6 Reboot all servers (let them discover new connections)
Final configration would be:
Controller A
Slot 1 VIO Server 1
Slot 2
Slot 3 Server 1 (one of the AIX 5.2)
Slot 4 Server 2 (the other AIX 5.2)
Controller B
Slot 1
Slot 2 VIO Server 2
Slot 3 Server 1 (one of the AIX 5.2)
Slot 4 Server 2 (the other AIX 5.2)
Would we have to remove any devices (dar, dac, fcnet, fcs, fscsi, hdisk) prior to reboot so that old configuration will be removed and new configuration discovered prior to shutdown at step 4? What about the VIO servers? Should they be on the different slots as above or should they be on the same slot (one on controller A slot 1 and the other on controller B slot 1)?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
