    <NL> is aimed at being platform independent.

    <CR><LF> is what we usually find used on Windows platforms to separate lines of data.

    <LF> is what is predominantly used on Unix platforms for that purpose.

    So if you are developing maps that are to be used on other platforms, it would be useful to use <NL> in place of <CR><LF> so that your map works when ported over.
