  • 1.  Dependency of VIOS on HMC

    Hi,

    A client is planning to move from VIOS 2.2.6.20 to VIOS 3.1.4.21 and the current HMC is 7042-CR9 and HMC version is V9 R1 M910 which is out of support and the latest HMC version supported on V9 R1 M910 is V9 R2 M953 which is also out of support. I want to check if there is any dependency of HMC on VIOS. Can we plan to upgrade the VIOS with the current HMC version?

    As such we do not have any dependency . You can independently upgrade your vios from the vios itself using viosupgrade in 2 steps . 

    First update from Vios 2.2.6.20 to 2.2.6.65 to get access to viosupgrade tool on vios cli 

    Update current VIOS Version from 2.x to 2.2.6.65 for non-SSP environment    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6447005

    Then upgrade the vios from 2.2.6.65 to 3.1.4.21 using viosupgrade

    Make sure your hardware supports Vios 3.1.4.x

    If you dont use IBM storage and have some 3rd Party storage used on VIOS . Please raise a case with IBM 

    Just a note during above process , you need to use HMC for some reason and you have a issue , for that you will have to work with HMC

    As per the readme file, Following would be update path:

    2.2.6.20 --> 2.2.6.61 --> 2.2.6.65 --> 3.1.0.00 --> 3.1.4.21

    Hello Hitesh ,

    Kindly read the documents given above , carefully and patiently 

    1) You can combine "2.2.6.61+2.2.6.65"  together and update from 2.2.6.20 to 2.2.6.65 in first step.

    2) Then you can upgrade from 2.2.6.65 to 3.1.4.21 in one step
