  • 1.  DEP iPad stuck at Awaiting Final Configuration screen

    Customer has iPads in Apple Business Manager which is integrated with their MaaS360 portal. During DEP enrollment, the iPad is stuck at a "Awaiting final configuration from <company name>" screen. The customer tried restoring the iPad via iTunes but still getting stuck at this screen.

    Hi Joseph,

    Have you confirmed that all the Apple tokens on the customer portal are valid and not expired or revoked?

    There are 2 tokens to check here for this enrollment issue :

    1. the APNs token - go to Setup > Services > Mobile Device Management : check the APNs expiry date. Is it valid?
    2. the DEP token for DEP enrollments - go to Devices > Enrollments > Other Enrollment Options > Apple Device Enrollment (DEP) > Tokens > Tokens. Check expiry and also look for any error displayed in red above the token.

    You should also check that the device in question has a DEP profile assigned at the following location Devices > Enrollments > Other Enrollment Options > Apple Device Enrollment (DEP). You'll need the device serial number to locate it on this page.

    If all tokens are good and the DEP profile is assigned, try one more hard reset with iTunes, then power off the phone for 10 to 15 minutes. Now try enroll again.

    Have you checked to see if the customer has available licenses?  Also, Check the quality of the network connection.

    You said the iPad was restored using iTunes, but there is a very specific process (a "recovery mode" install) that you need to do.  See http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263 .  At the prompt choose RESTORE (not Update).   Please note bullet #4.  The iOS firmware can take over 15 minutes to download and if it does the iPad will reboot without updating the firmware.  That is the most common issue I've seen is that the user doesn't actually complete the restore as iOS times out.

    To support Tim Faulk's comments, this is also called a DFU.  If the iPad has been previously connected to an MDM and has another MDM profile on it or if it had an activation lock (find my iPad/Apple ID) YOU will have to do this properly.

    Try to put the device in DFU mode and make sure the device is on a good known to work network.

    Thanks all for the feedback. Yes the APNs token and DEP token are all valid and we did perform a DFU/Restore via iTunes as outlined here http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263

    I did find this from an Apple discussion board from 2016 and will try the DFU Restore again

    1.) log into your DEP portal https://deploy.apple.com/

    2.) go to Manage Devices

    3.) Enter the device serial number and choose "Unassign Devices"

    4.) wait a minute

    5.) Enter the serial number again then choose "Assign to Server"

    6.) Select your MDM server

    7.) Restore the device to factory settings with iTunes

    8.) start over again and it should work

    Update: This is resolved. It appears the issue was the iPads and iPhones had to be upgraded to the latest version (DFU Restore did not work) and we had to enroll onto a guest wifi network (corp wifi and hotspot did not work). Thank you for all your suggestions!
