    Hello,

I'm new to planning analytics, so please pardon my ignorance.

I am trying to explore the options for demand forecasting with lowest data grain being product names.
Ideally, we want to setup a system/application easy enough for all our Business users to use historical data and plan setup forecast models.

I see there is an option in Cognos Analytics 11.1.4 onward but that only works with dashboards visualization.
It doesn't have much options but helps to see the forecast numbers. The concern for me here is its not comprehensive and also not possible to extrapolate the numbers into excel, csv or crosstab.

I also found the the video below. Per the demo, with PA we can predict based on actual values.
One thing I am unclear is does it require SPSS in the backend or Planning Analytics allow us to use linear regression algorithms without SPSS.  Is everything in the demo possible without SPSS.

We don't need planning analytics but we are considering to upgrade cognos EP to planning analytics and then if there is an option for basic forecasting, we will be happy.

    Please advise.

    Sudheen,

Based on your brief description of your needs, Planning Analytics would provide great value to your organization for your demand forecasting and allow you to create applications/interfaces your business users could easily use. You are correct in that Cognos Analytics can now provide some predictive analytics against data but in a release that is imminent (this summer), PA will provide a similar capability with the added benefit of putting the results in to the cube where they can then be adjusted further. This new PA predictive capability utilizes several algorithims and you can review the logic however you can't adjust it. I would add that upgrading from EP to TM1 should definitely be considered, not only because of the predicitve functionality but for so many other reasons as well.  Excel interface is top notch in PA and you can interface PA with predicitive models that you can create with Python/Jupyter without the need for SPSS if it isn't in your budget. Of course, the SPSS integration is pretty seamless.
