We have a Power6 520 server and a disk sub system. We have 8 300GB SAS disks which we divided into two RAID 5 disk arrays. The thing is after building both arrays, the RAID status is degraded. Take note that each disk in the two arrays are completely fine since it's new. It also shows "available" when checking for the status of each disks. We also checked if there were problems on the RAID adapter and the path and there were none. The path is operational from the device to the drivers.

We tried isolating the problem by writing on the disk array as a whole and writing on a single disk only. The results showed that the read/write speed when writing into the disk array is only around 13mb/s. On the other hand when we read/write on just a single disk the speed shows around 130mb/s. Also we noticed that the LEDs on the 8 SAS disks were blinking every now and then even without any activity being done on the disk. Any thoughts on what could be the source of problem?

Thank you very much in advance.

That is, the RAID controller had a built-in rechargable battery to preserve the disk cache if the power failed. That battery had exceeded its allowed lifespan, so the system reported the array status as "Degraded".

What is the command output that showed "Degraded" on your system?
