Is it possible to control which elements are used as default when replacing a hierarchy in a view?

    The case is the following:
We are using a product hierarchy based on categories on the rows and initially is it only showing the top node. If I replace the hierarchy with a product hierarchy based on market segment then it default show the top node and the level below. We would like to keep it to the top node only.

    Hi,
It is my understanding that you can create a "Default" set for each hierarchy that is used when the hierarchy if first displayed.   To do this change to the hierarchy you want, create a set, and when you save it label is as default.

Let me know if this does not work.

    Hi Scott
Unfortunately it makes no difference. I still have to select the default subset after the replacement of the hierarchy. So the use of (default) subset makes it a little easier but it still requires an extra action from the users.

And PAW does not automatically have the notion of a default set. You can name a set 'Default' but it is not an option like in the old days.

    Hi,

Huh.  If I am in set editor and change to the hierarchy, it automatically opens the default set underneath, but you are right if you just swap it in the cube viewer, it does not use the default subset.  If you open an enhancement request for this, let me know so I can vote for it!

    Hi

I presume that you are talking about Exploration Views in PAX? If you want to get it to show the Default Subset on the Market Segment Named Hierarchy then you must explicitly drag the Default Subset for that Hierarchy. If you just drag the Hierarchy itself onto the Exploration View, then it will default to showing the Default Element. This is the way that standard MDX works in eg SQL Server Analytics Services, which effectively is the defacto standard for MDX.

You can define the Default Element in the }HierarchyProperties cube alongside the relevant Dimension:Hierarchy name.

However, if you want a particular Subset then you need to drag that particular Subset. It won't automatically select the Default Subset if you don't do that.

    Hi Paul.
Thanks for your input. Our issue is in PAW when you right-mouse click on the existing dim/hierarchy and choose replace. Then the selected hierarchy is expanded one level which is not the default subset. Then I can select the default or other subset but it requires an extra action.
