Hello Harish,
quite some long time ago IBM gave up the raw disk support. I think it was in Db2 9.7 or so.
Now Db2 just asks the file system to create a file of x GB size. The file system checks if it has an according junk of free space, but also return you a fragmented file depending on your previous disk content. This is another reason for starting on a clean and separate file space with a decent file size.
Db2 builds its own logical system within these container files.
The file system on OS level could also consist of multiple junks from your storage subsystem.
All these details are transparent to the user.
Yes, there are chances to make it better, and chances to wreck it.
Cheers

I am not mixing things up. Earlier db2 was using raw or device containers, no file system layer involved, anything db2 pushes into and gets from comes from raw disk without file system layer.
Now db2 uses file system based storage. So there has to be some mapping for the file system and db2 to lookup for a page or extent in disk.
I am not c programmer, I just could not understand how db2 requests for an extent on a table which is a logical map on a logical tablespace, and underlying file system is able to provide those extents from underlying physical storage without a mapping?
I hope I am trying to explain the question in detail in an effort to make all understand what I am asking for. It may be a low level programming thing but if any one has any thoughts please share, it will be helpful to know.
I totally understand it's not going to help in a day to day activities of managing db2 but just to get a clear picture what is happening under the hood is giving me a good satisfaction.
Thanks
Harishkumar
Thanks,
Harish P

Hi Harish,
you are mixing up OS level or file system level defragmentation with logical reorganization within Db2 tablespace containers. These things have to be done separate.

Hi,
It will be helpful to know if we can synchronize xfs extent map and tablespace map at the storage or file system level.
When we talk about reorg organizing pages of tablespace is it only a logical construction or physical at the file system level or storage medium level?
Thanks
Harishkumar

Join us for an insightful discussion on 15 July, 2025 at 11:00 AM ET. As databases grow and evolve, table and index fragmentation can become a significant challenge, leading to inefficient storage utilization and degraded query performance. This session provides a deep dive into the structure and maintenance of Db2 LUW tables and indexes, with a focus on the REORG process as a critical performance tuning strategy. Attendees will gain a solid understanding of how Db2 organizes data and indexes, and learn how to identify when reorganization is necessary. The session will explore the different types of REORG operations: REORG TABLE, REORG INDEX, and Online vs. Offline REORG, along with best practices for selecting the right approach based on system availability and performance goals. Whether you're a DBA or performance engineer, this session will equip you with the knowledge and tools to maintain a healthy, high-performing Db2 LUW environment.
