In r12, when a datalink connector is scheduled to run, this automatically checks in the table, which kicks off a new calculation in your environment.  Since best practice suggests a check in cadence, once a day in our environment, these random datalink check ins are not ideal.  

It appears that the only way to create a manual check in for datalink connectors is to create a group within the datalink connector, even though the group may only contain one table. 

Below is a screen shot of the options when creating a group connector check in, but I have been unable to find this option without creating a group.  

Is there another way to allow for manual check ins with datalink uploads without creating a group?

There isn't a way to set a check in action per connector, only per connector group.

However you can simply schedule any connector to run on a specific schedule at some time off hours.

Group check-in groups only Instance, domain, project and schedule. Tables are specified per connector so various tables can be uploaded to the same project and will stay in the same workspace until manually checked in if "Do not check-in any table after upload (requires manual checkin)" option is selected.

Intent of best practice for check-ins is to reduce files staying in checked out state over long periods of time and to reduce constantly calculating projects. This can be accomplished via currently available connector and group check-in options.
