    Last weekend I attended DataKind's annual Washington DC Data Dive, where data scientists from around the nation's capital came together to volunteer their data science abilities to help some organizations solve some of their most pressing data related problems. Projects included:
    • The American Red Cross used their data to detect where fires are most usually occurring, identify the factors that lead to fires and injuries/death and to decide where the Red Cross should expand its presence.
    • The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies used its data visualize and contextualize the political inequalities that African Americans still face today.
    • Capital Nature used its data to promote the natural resources and riches of the Washington DC area to its residents.
    • The Global Fund for Children used its collected data to optimize its operations by identifying what makes similar organizations successful.
    DataKind was founded in 2011 in Brooklyn, New York and operates in locations from the UK to Singapore with a mission of using data for good in the world - a mission with heightened importance within the context of the current global issues surrounding data usage. From longer term DataCorps assignments to weekend-long blitz projects such as this past weekend's Data Dive, DataKind provides an opportunity to use data for the advancement of social good.
