  • 1.  Database Migrating from IMS DB TO DB2 on z/OS

    Posted Fri July 11, 2025 10:14 AM

We have a requirement to migrate IMS DB to DB2 on z/OS, is there any tool available on the database side?  Additionally, if there are tool that can do both apps side and Database side that is also acceptable.

Can someone help with any details?

The migration can be very easy.   You could do a one for one, IMS object to a Db2 table, then link the tables together with RI.   This will allow for a quick conversion with minor program changes.  However skipping the proper steps like doing all the stuff needed for a data model and possible data flow diagram before creating a single database object or any application code will give a better and easier to maintain system with reduced operational costs.

Hierarchical data products can be converted directly to Db2 but don't perform as good as a well designed relational  model.   Save your self some headaches and do it the correct way.  You will be glad you did.
