It appears that the curl ssl rpm is looking for an rpm prereq -
which does not exist.

Does anyone have any light to shed on the prereq confusion ?

if you have the prereqs in place and the problem is caused by rpm's failure to recognize they're fulfilled, the --nodeps option might save your day:

rpm -vi curl-7.9.3-3ssl.*.rpm --nodeps

Try installing the openssl packages from the AIX Expansion Set, and not the AIX Toolbox for Linux. They can both be installed simultaneously.

Packages on the Toolbox media such as curl, wget, and lynx require the version on the Expansion Set, but other packages on the Toolbox media like openssh will work fine with the version on the Toolbox media itself.
