    im trying to create an lpp source from some .bff files on a cdrom:

    ls /cdrom/
    aix_0001.bff aix_0002.bff cd.md5

    Im using the following command:

    nim -o define -t lpp_source -a source=/export/lpp_source/tmp -a server=master -a location=/export/lpp_source/core/5.3/53-10-01 lpp_source_53-10-01

    I have also tried using following source variables:

    source=/cdrom
    source=/dev/cd0
    source=/cdrom/aix_0001.bff

    All commands give the following error:

    0042-175 c_mk_lpp_source: An unexpected result was returned by the "/usr/sbin/installp" command:

    Does /export/lpp_source/core/5.3/53-10-01 exist?

    Filled in a few options and then F6 shows the command to run is /usr/lpp/bos.sysmgt/nim/methods/m_setup so that was not much help, unless you give in and use smit.

    Seems your LPP_SOURCE Directory is the problem so you might need to create at least /export/lpp_source/core/5.3 if not /export/lpp_source/core/5.3/53-10-01 before you start as it seems nim might be having a problem creating the destination directory for your lpp_source.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply, the directory does exist but I have tried the command with and without the directory there, I used the new ways you suggested:
    smitty nim
    Configure the NIM Environment
    Advanced Configuration
    Create Basic Installation Resources
    Create a New LPP_SOURCE Only

    Type or select values in entry fields.
    Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

    Entry Fields
    • Resource SERVER master
    Input device for installation images [/cdrom] +
    (specify the device on the resource server)
    • LPP_SOURCE Name 53-10-01
    • LPP_SOURCE Directory [/export/lpp_source/core/5.3] +
    Architecture of Resource power +
    Show Progress yes +
    Create new filesystem for LPP_SOURCE? no +
    Filesystem SIZE (MB) 650 #
    VOLUME GROUP for new filesystem rootvg +

    Remove all newly added NIM definitions yes +
    and filesystems if any part of this
    operation fails?
    Again I have tried it from /dev/cd0 from the mounted cdrom and from local file system and it still fails with the same error message:

    rc=175
    0042-175 c_mk_lpp_source: An unexpected result was returned by the "/usr/sbin/installp" command:
    0503-003 geninstall: The specified device /export/lpp_source/core/5.3/53-10-01
    is not a valid device or file.
    An Error Occurred.

    >>>> Undoing the partial configuration because something failed

    I do however get a different message when input device is /dev/cd0:

    >>>> Creating the 53-10-01 LPP_SOURCE resource from /dev/cd0.
    (This may take a while.)
