Took another look, after installing bos.sysmgt.nim.master and, using smitty nim > Advanced Configuration > Create Basic Installation Resources > Create a New LPP_SOURCE Only

Filled in a few options and then F6 shows the command to run is /usr/lpp/bos.sysmgt/nim/methods/m_setup so that was not much help, unless you give in and use smit.

Seems your LPP_SOURCE Directory is the problem so you might need to create at least /export/lpp_source/core/5.3 if not /export/lpp_source/core/5.3/53-10-01 before you start as it seems nim might be having a problem creating the destination directory for your lpp_source.

Again I have tried it from /dev/cd0 from the mounted cdrom and from local file system and it still fails with the same error message:
