  • 1.  Copy & Paste bug in version 29 in Data view and Output

    Posted 07/11/24 08:32 AM

    Hello!

I recently updated to v. 29.0.2 from v.28, using MacOS. Suddenly I'm not able to use the desktop short-command Command + V to paste numbers from one variable's cell to another (this worked fine before the update), the copy-command Command+C works but to get the numbers to a cell in another variable, I have to manually right-click and choose "Paste".

Also when I want to copy results from Output, to put in for example Excel, I use "Command +C" and the window for copy-alternatives (e.g. Plain text, Copy special etc.) pops up and then quickly disappears, so fast you have no chance to click on it. If I right-click on a result to copy something, the alternative "Copy Special" is not available like in previous versions, only "Copy".

This is very inconvenient when working with data on a daily basis. Please help, is there anything I can do to fix it? Tried rerunning the program and restarting my computer, did not change anything unfortunately.

Hello Nike.  I am am still using v. 28.0.1.1 for Windows, so I cannot give any specific advice about v. 29.0.2 for the Mac.  However, I can tell you that the Copy/Paste problem you have encountered has been around for a very long time.  E.g., see this thread in the old SPSS forum on Nabble:

As you can see in some of the posts there, some of us thought that SPSS was sometimes not allowing the clipboard to be cleared, and that one workaround was to clear it via the operating system.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Bruce

Just googling this as this problem has still not been fixed, which is unbelievable. The bug has apparently been around since at least v. 21.

My workaround has been to cut a random piece of text from my syntax and paste it back, which seems to reset it, but ffs, this bug appears every single day. I don't want to be using a stupid workaround every single day of my working life. By now I must have wasted hours, if not days of my life on workarounds for this ridiculous bug.

When is someone finally going to fix this?

    Using v. 29.0.1.

Hello Lannie, sorry you are experiencing that problem. We have never been able to reproduce the issue in-house, either in the development team or QA. I worked with engineers to try and surmise what may be happening and we believe we found a potential cause in the code, and have addressed it in the newly released version 30. If you or anyone else is able to reproduce this issue in version 30, please feel free to message me privately and we will work with you to figure out what is happening and address it.

    Best,

Thanks Curtis, good to hear you have been working on this in spite of not being able to reproduce the bug. Unfortunately I don't have access to v30 yet, but hopefully other users can test it in the meantime. Looking forward to trying out the new version!

I've run into similar frustrations with copy-paste glitches in complex data views. It reminds me how important accurate identification is, even outside coding like with insects! I recently used a free AI-powered tool that lets you upload a photo to instantly identify bugs and learn about their behaviors and habitats. It's surprisingly fast at narrowing down species and can save a lot of guesswork free insect identifier. Definitely handy for curious minds and meticulous observers.

    Hi @Olivia

What version of IBM SPSS Statistics are you using? We put fixes in for Data Editor clipboard operations in recent releases. We have not heard of any clipboard problems with the Data Editor since that time (we are working on resolving a last few Syntax Editor issues for version 32.0.0). Please update to the latest version (31.0.2) and let us know if you still experience problems with Data Editor clipboard operations.

    Best,

    Curtis
