  • 1.  Compute subtower mappings for shared platforms

I do not understand the technology well enough to ask this question well, but I hope someone who does can help.  If a department within IT manages shared platforms (mainly converged and hyperconverged infrastructure) that benefit Windows and Linux, how should they map those shared platform costs to the subtowers and/or elements?  Note:  We have divided the Compute - Servers subtower into Windows and Linux elements.  Part of the challenge is that when they purchase a chassis, they do not always know what operating system(s) will end up running on the blades.  Could you please share how you have seen this handled and offer explanation as to why it was handled that way?

You could use a percentage of the overall device count to determine the respective allocations.  For instance, if your total server count is 100 and 85 of those servers run the Windows OS, your allocation would be 85 % for Windows and 15% for Linux.

We have used an allocation methodology similar to this in the past to help determine fiscal year allocations for our various locations so if you can't determine another way to handle it, this may be a viable alternative.  We handled it this way because the budgets were co-mingled and there was not another easy way to calculate the allocations and monitor for growth down the road.  Hope that helps.

@Julie Whitehurst Thank you for taking the time to reply.  This approach might work for us.  I will certainly suggest that we consider it.
