    Hi there,

I'm trying to find a good definition online for what LinuxONE machines actually are (besides "specialized servers built exclusively to run Linux enterprise applications" as defined by SUSE). My understanding is that LinuxONE usually mainly have IFLs because they are meant to be used with Linux on LPAR installations only but also believe that a z15 can be converted into a LinuxONE and vice versa.

There's this quick overview of z15 and LinuxOne III and superficially, there also seems to be more I/O power in the z15 box than in the LinuxOne which then again seems to have more PUs itself.

Am I getting it all wrong? Are there other difference that escaped my notice?

Thanks for any help with clarification in advance.

    Sebastian

Hi Sebastian, the key difference is that LinuxONE is only IFLs, so you can only run Linux on them. Otherwise they can be configured pretty much identically to a z15, depending on what you need.

Hi Sebastian, additionally to what Elizabeth stated, to avoid confusion on your statement "they are meant to be used with Linux on LPAR installations only", in LinuxONE you cannot deploy z/OS, z/VSE or z/TPF, but if logical partitioning (LPAR) does not provide the consolidation, utilisation or agility to want for your Linux workloads, you can use/it is supported, and in fact is very common, virtualisation technologies/products like IBM z/VM or Linux KVM at the LPAR level on LinuxONE (and also IBM Z) and deploy Linux guests on top of it.

    Hope it helps!
