I'm excited to announce a new BI cross-product release that allows reporting for ApptioOne Cost (Cloud TotalCost) data with corresponding metrics and dimensions in Apptio BI

This is another way we are helping you bring data from ApptioOne Cost into Apptio BI to visualize your data across products in new and visually appealing ways. I am going to show you some example visualizations (and how to make them), as well in this post - whether it is to create individual visualizations or ad-hoc answers to Cloud inquires - which now can all be done in one location, BI!

When creating or handling reports on Apptio BI, you can now select Cloud TotalCost as the data source to base your reports on. Cloud TotalCost will appear as an option in the Data Source drop-down if Cloud TotalCost project type has been created in TBM Studio and data is available in the production environment. Note that this requires Cost Transparency 12.10.6 or above.

We want to know, after reading through this post:

    1. Does this release impact your experience with Cloud TotalCost / Cost Transparency or Apptio BI? If so, how is this useful and why?

    2. Do you have any questions about this release and how to get started?

    3. If you have not tried Cloud TotalCost, would you like to learn more - what questions do you have?'

Jumping into Cloud TotalCost in BI

To get started you must have created a Cloud TotalCost project in TBM Studio, and so if that is not present, ensure that you have installed CTC-Foundation and CTC-Oracle Cloud and appropriate steps have been followed. Check with your Apptio representative for further assistance on this if required.

Once created, in Apptio BI open Data Source Management and check the data source to make it available:

Now let's show some sample Use Cases and Visualizations giving you a view of how this feels and functions in Apptio BI!

Say you would like to view direct cloud costs for products over a specific time period using a modelled metric. Users can create a new report with just a handful of clicks. After opening Apptio BI and selecting Create a Report, from the Dats source menu choose Cloud Total Cost . From the dimensions menu choose Services → Product. Under metrics, I chose  Financials → Direct Cloud Costs and selected This Month for a Date Range.

Select a Table visualization to display the following data:

Let's create a Visualization in your Report with multiple dimensions:

Here, I want to use the Cloud TotalCost Data Source to see Cloud Costs this year to date by Products and Services over the past month. In BI, I select Product and Service Category under Dimensions. Then, select under Metrics select Cloud Costs YTD. I have selected to sort by Cloud Costs YTD in a descending order.

In another example, to see how you can view multiple dimensions and metrics, and date ranges with the CTC data source in BI with this data source to look at Towers (by location) with cloud costs and usage quantities.

    I select
Data Source: Cloud TotalCost, I select Services/Identification →Type and Usage → Unit under Dimensions and under Metrics, select Direct Cloud Costs and Usage Qty. I selected a date range (Q4 by Month) and display the following:

For a complex example that hones in on could costs and spend for a particular service item, lets add in compound filtering. Here, we are looking at Services and Items by Cloud Costs and Usage Qty.  I chose the date range "This Year" (2023).

To filter, I go to add a filter and chose the following:

      • Go to Filters
      • Add a new filter: "Service Name = Service Desk"
      • add AND
      • "Item Starts With GCP"

This created the following, which I can save for future reference or make a part of my ongoing TotalCost report.

Here is another filtered example using "AND"...

    • "Item Starts With GCP"

You can also add in pivot tables, drills, and other customization options, as you would in other visualizations with other data sources. Here I am pivoting by Service Name incorporating Costs, Rates, Filters, Databases and Multiple Cost Metrics:

Give it a try and let us know how it goes  - then comment below! Ask questions and let us know if you would like to speak to someone at Apptio about your experience, and as always we encourage your to share your particular use cases with the Community.
