  • 1.  Client request - how to keep Price fixed and to be able to modify both Quantity and Net Sales at both N and C levels

    Posted Tue May 06, 2025 09:44 AM

    Client request – In the model, we have the elements Quantity, Price, and Net Sales. Quantity and Price are input fields, and there is a rule on Net Sales: Quantity × Price = Net Sales.
    The client wants the ability to keep Price fixed and to be able to modify both Quantity and Net Sales at both N and C levels. They do not want any workarounds or additional measures or elements.
    Can someone help with this? Thank you in advance.

    Tina

    Hi,
    You will not be able to do this with business rules and not adding additional measures or controls.   If one is a calculated value in a rule like your Net Sales, then you cannot do input on that cell.   However, you can do it with a TI process.   Allow the user to make changes to any two of the three values, then have them push a button and specify in a parameter which of the three to calculate.  Then have the TI do the calculation.

    Hi Tina

    With a rule like ['net sales'] = N: ['Quantity'] * ['Price'];

    You can hold net sales et input value into Quantity or Price

    You can hold Quantity and "spread data" into Net Sales

    You can ( i hope, play with N and C level).

    I write a wiki (in franche sorry) wich explain all you can do with this kind of solution : https://www.next-decision.fr/wiki/utilisation-des-consolidations-dans-planning-analytics

    Hope it can help.

    Kind regrds,

    Philippe

    Hello,

    This particular example is described in Yuri's blog: https://www.ykud.com/blog/cognos/tm1-input-in-calculated-cells-or-break-back/

    Hi, I have a customer doing this happily for 10+ years. You do this by making Net Sales a C-Element with only Quantity as its child. Price is a standalone N-Element. So far its easy, but there are implications with it. If you want to calculate a wighted average on price aggregation, you will get a circular reference. For that you need one additional element to work around. I attached a small sample model.
