  • 1.  chinese characters not properly encoded in spss

    Posted Fri April 09, 2021 01:22 AM

i'm currently working with data from a chinese longitudinal survey and the chinese characters which are present in the original file are not displayed properly, and instead show up as symbols such as éèç&$. this is preventing me from understanding the data. I tried to turn unicode on and off, and modified the installation by adding Chinese(traditional) but the characters are still not displayed properly. How can I solve this issueÉ

What is your file? Is it a sav file or some other type of input? If you are in Unicode mode, it converts the file to Unicode using information on the input encoding. sav files have their encoding recorded in the file, so knowing the input type is important.

Other than that, it is possible that you are using a font that does not have the traditional Chinese characters in it. You might see different results in the Data Editor and the Viewer.

    Please elaborate.

That should be okay unless it is a very old file. If you want to send me the file, I'll take a look. (jkpeckSupport Member)
