Hello, we have a customer that wants to change their FCD device from aligned to un-aligned mode. What does it mean to the documents that had retention set on them while in Aligned Mode? Could retention be changed on them by running a sweep?

Unaligned means exactly that. When unaligned you have two systems that set retention times independently and that inevitably leads to the fact that they will sooner or later diverge.

Sure you can run a sweep, but the settings of the sweep will not propagate to the FCD.

    Hope this helps,

So if the storage device set to unaligned with no retention, can the extsting content be deleted from the storage device?

If the content has its retention time expired yes, otherwise maybe. Maybe because there have been changes in behaviour in the recent releases and in my experience also varies somewhat from from FCD to FCD.

What likely will happen is that the document is deleted from CPE DB and a delete request is queued. This will fail x times filling the logs and then give up.

If you tell us what the FCD is, there MIGHT be workarounds (e.g. on the NetApp Snaplock device...)
