Can APM capture and display application information such as number of users active on the system, number of active shopping carts, value of merchandise in shopping carts?

APM can display lot of information about application. It can display active users but not business specific information like active carts etc by default. 

Yes, echoing that answer, APM can capture number of active users and sessions as shown in demo but it doesn't currently doesn't take advantage of the session details and hence cannot show you some business aspects like shopping carts, merchandise value etc.
