  • 1.  CA 11.1.3 Reporting- "on-demand" tool bar documentation

    Posted Wed October 23, 2019 12:37 PM
We are very impressed with the functionality of "on-demand" tool bar. we have created a DMR package and plan to use it for self-service capabilities. so far, I am unable to find good documentation on the functionality of various buttons. most of them seems to self explanatory, but if we want to introduce it business users, they would need some good documentation and hand holding. for example, just under "Explore" button there are plethora of options , but I couldn't find documentation on these.

I am also perplexed to an extent that if these features continue to stay in upcoming releases or can function differently ? I'm not sure if IBM advertised these features during version releases. If some one close to the product development can shed some light future of "on-demand" toolbar in Reporting we would greatly appreciate.

side topic and might warrant a separate thread but why are you still using DMR?

what would you suggest in place of DMR package ? Data Modules ? We haven't tried Data Modules yet.

I am also interested in the answer to this question.  We have done DMR over Netezza and the performance has been nice.  If we want to do dimensional reporting (non dashboard) this seems like the best option as we don't want to bother with In Memory Cubes.  What direction does IBM suggest us take here.

It does appear that IBM is encouraging folks to go in a different direction from DMR.  I suspect that the main reason is that without a proper back-end architecture with high performance and well-structured dimensional schema, DMR performance tends to be unacceptable.  MOLAP with PowerCubes was a cure, but with limited scale given the 2GB size limitations and 32-bit architecture.  Tim, your Netezza environment is a perfect compliment for a ROLAP/DMR approach, and as long as you see longevity in the upstream components, I'd stick with it.  Migrating from FM to Data Modules is probably not the best option in your scenario.  We also haven't been given a clear signal on the future for Dynamic Cubes, so I would be very hesitant to invest any migration or net-new development efforts there either.  I like the idea of navigation paths in Data Modules since it provides a much more flexible and user-defined hierarchy modeling component, but it's not equivalent to the power of the Explore features that started this conversation.  I'm happy to chat to anybody else about these benefits, feel free to message me here!

    Hi Hem,
It's funny, I just browsed the product documentation, and these features are not documented at all, that I can find.  We have been teaching how to use these exploration features for many years now, because I still strongly believe that OLAP and data exploration offer tremendous value to analysts.  I did find some legacy documentation as these features were first introduced in Cognos Workspace Advanced on the 10.2 platform.  The specific icons and menu commands may be a bit different, but the basic OLAP/Explore functionality in the current Reporting UI is basically the same.  Hope this helps, check out Chapter 9 at: http://data.ucop.edu/support-training/cognos-files/cognos-workspace-advanced-10.2.2.pdf.  You can also find this in the IBM KnowldegCenter at: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSEP7J_10.2.2/com.ibm.swg.ba.cognos.ug_rptstd_fin.10.2.2.doc/t_replace_members.html#replace_members
Follow the path in the ToC: Author and Create -> Cognos Workspace Advanced User Guide 10.2.2 -> Exploring Dimensional Data
