  • 1.  Best way to copy a list of reports from one Cognos to another Cognos

We have two Cognos clients that are merging and want to copy some (or maybe all) of their reports from Cognos1 to Cognos2. Any idea on how to do this without having to manually get each report definition from Cognos1 and then paste into Cognos2 and Save? Cognos1 has maybe 300 reports. There are a lot of questions still unanswered from the clients. But just getting some ideas about what might work most efficiently to see if it is even an option.

    Hi Brenda,

Just use the partial deployment option, deploying only selected public folders and directory content.

    Hello Brenda,

Option 1: Use Deployment Archives (Best Practice)

This is the recommended and most scalable method.

    • 1.       Log into Cognos Administration on Cognos1.
    • 2.       Go to Configuration > Content Administration.
    • 3.       Click New Export.
    • 4.       Select the reports, folders, or packages you want to export.
    • 5.       Save the deployment archive (a .zip file).
    • 6.       Move the archive to Cognos2 (via file transfer).
    • 7.       On Cognos2, go to Content Administration > New Import.
    • 8.       Import the archive and choose the target location.

This method preserves metadata, permissions, and dependencies.

Option 2: Manually Export/Import XML (For a Few Reports)

If you only need a small number of reports:

    • 1.       In Cognos1, open the report in Report Studio.
    • 2.       Use Tools > Copy Report to Clipboard (XML format).
    • 3.       In Cognos2, create a new report and paste the XML into the source.

This is what you're doing now-but only ideal for a handful of reports.

    Hi Brenda,

Had a client that did the partial deployment (staging folder) along with a scheduled trigger.sh to export a deployment at a certain time of day to the share. An import was triggered a few minutes later on the higher environment to import that folder content.

It saved the admin from being on call for moving content.

    Hi all.

We have developed a tool that allows end users to select any Cognos objects (reports, data modules, FM packages, dashboards, etc.) and request their deployment.

The objects can then be documented or a change note can be left.

The target folder can also be changed.

An automated deployment process then runs in the background.
