Azure VM's Latest Price Slash? - the D/E Series v5

  • 1.  Azure VM's Latest Price Slash? - the D/E Series v5

    Posted Tue October 19, 2021 08:52 AM

Cloud providers like AWS, Azure and GCP are constantly updating their services. Each update is accompanied with improvements on hardware performance or functionality.  Furthermore, new instance generations are usually more cost effective when compared to their predecessors. A few examples that we're all aware of and are surfaced through Cloudability rightsizing are -

    • When AWS announced a new EBS General Purpose SSD, GP3. With GP3, it came with improved performance and a 20% haircut compared to GP2. You can read more about it here: https://www.apptio.com/blog/amazons-gp3-ebs-volumes-cloudability/
    • AWS EC2's current generation t3, where we saw better performance and 10% discount over t2

What you may not be aware of is the upcoming generation Azure VMs, v5 for the D and E series. And at first glance, this new generation is noticeably cheaper than the current v4. Let's take a look at the pricing page for Ds_v4 vs Ds_v5: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/virtual-machines/windows/

Latest generation v5 (still in preview)

    Current generation v4

As you can see, for the same CPU and RAM, Azure's newest generation Ds_v5 instance is exactly 50% cheaper than the current generation Ds_v4. The hourly rate on the latest generation is also cheaper than the current generation's reserved instance price! That being said, as Ds_v5 is still in preview, we won't know for certain. Be on the lookout for its release.
