  • 1.  AWS RDS for Db2 licence cost

    Posted Thu March 20, 2025 09:34 AM

Hi all, in the AWS Marketplace, the hourly rate for on demand Advanced Edition of RDS for Db2 is $7.04 per VPC hour (1 VPC==2 vCPUs).

How do I estimate the cost for a large instance, (48 vCPUs); simple maths shows this as 730*24*7.04= $123K per month

This can't be right, what am I doing wrong?

I'm no AWS expert but isn't the cost also based on some kind of usage?

Could VPC hour mean that those CPUs are running at full throttle for a whole hour?

    Hi Stephen,

That certainly sounds like a lot of money :-(

Have you tried using the AWS Pricing Calculator ( https://calculator.aws/#/ ) yet?
If you set it up with the required DB2 RDS service (and anything else you may need), it should give you a monthly price estimate
(I haven't tried this, TBH, so just wondering if it will give you a more reasonable number).

    Kind regards, Damir

I think your math may be off.
I think it would be 730*7.04=5139.20

I think what you did was
    (365 days in a year * 24 Hours in a day)/12 months in a year = Your 730 hours in a month.
But you trying to times it by 24 hours again?

I think '24' in the original expression represents the 48 vCPU (a large instance), which comes from the assumption that 1 VPC==2 vCPUs.

    730*24*7.04= $123K per month.
