Automated Deployment logic and potential "Gotchas"

I'm currently working on getting the scripts together to automate deployment of applications at my company. I'm on was8ND and have a couple of questions.

I seen in another thread where a fellow was asking about deploying applicatino to his was7 environment and It made me feel like i needed to ask the following:

When updating an application from jython - as in we know it's there and just needs to be updated with the new ear file. Has anyone had any luck using the command - AdminApplication.updateEntireAppToAnAppWithUpdateCommand followed by AdminTask.updateAppOnCluster.

I'm deploying to a cluster and as usual the customer wants a "no down time" deployment.

My concerns with this are as follows:
Will the IHS plugin be updated accordingly  without 404'ing everything for a short while?
Do I need to be concerned with the application cache?

I ask about cache because while it's rolling the update out i cannot tell if it's clearing the cache on the respictive application server as it's bringing it back up.  Outside of these two things are there any other "gotchas" that anyone is aware of? I'm relatively new to this automation thing so more prone to noob mistakes.
