  • 1.  Automate transfer of Cognos report output to another file

    Posted Fri February 02, 2024 05:40 AM

    Hi,

An employee of the client I am working for manually copy pastes part of a Cognos report output (XL) i.e., specific columns and pastes them to an XL file to complete his task. This he does frequently and has requested for automation of this process.

The requirement here is automation of transfer (copy-paste) of specific columns from the XL output in Cognos to the file of the client. Could anyone let me know if there is a feature in Cognos that enables this and if not then what is the workaround for this?.

    Best Regards,

There is a Cognos add-in for Microsoft Office. Once you install it, you'll get a new ribbon tab in Excel (1). By clicking the big blue button on that tab, you'll get a pane (2) with all the reports. Select your report and it will be inserted into the spreadsheet (3). After that, by clicking the "Refresh All Data" button, you can easily refresh the data in your Excel file whenever you want.

    Hi Milan,

Thank you but the requirement here includes being able to transfer the data from a Cognos report to an XL file that is already populated with calculations which work on the data that is loaded from the Cognos report. Can this also be made possible?.

Should the user who needs this functionality install this add-in on his computer?. Does this require any configuration at the Cognos server level?.

Would also like to know if the add-in comes separately for a price from IBM or is it included in the Cognos installation?.

    Best Regards,

    1) Yes. You can read Cognos data into an existing Excel file. Formulas in that file can use the loaded data as a data source. You don't have to load the whole report, you can load just one list.
    2) The Cognos user must have the plugin installed.
I am not a Cognos administrator, so I don't know if there is a need to configure anything on the Cognos server.
    3) "How is Cognos for Microsoft Office licensed?
Cognos for Microsoft Office is a free feature. All Cognos users are licensed to use this plugin. "

    Milan,

Thank you so much for the suggestion.

Could you please provide details on how I can obtain the software (Add in)? i.e., Cognos add-in for MS office.

    Best Regards,

    Hi,

You download software from the Passport Advantage site:

    https://www.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage/pao_download_software.html

You will need your IBM credentials to log in.

    Cheers!

    MF.
