  • 1.  Attempt to connect to remote server failed

    Posted Sun September 06, 2020 09:04 AM

    Hi there,

I'm using SPSS 26 on Catalina. I'm trying to add a large group of value labels for 193 Countries.

After opening a new syntax window, coping the country names and numbers, adding quotes, adding my line of code, typing EXECUTE and clicking RUN I'm getting an error message and this notification: "Attempt to connect to remote server failed".

I can no longer use SPSS and need to force quit and reopen to operate SPSS.

Any idea why this is not working and causing this problem?

    Thanks in advance,

    Cassandra

Have you installed the fixpack for V26? Catalina broke a number of things that are addressed in the fixpack.

    Hi Jon,

    Thanks for you reply.

Yes I have installed the Fix Pack, couldn't open datasets without installing it.

I realised there was an error in my country list as Côte d'Ivoire has an apostrophe so once removed I was able to add the value labels for the complete list of countries.

Rather than a notification in the data output window of the mistake I was getting a pop up window with the message: "Attempt to connect to remote server failed". I get the same message if I make any other errors in the syntax window. Not particularly helpful (not to mention frustrating!) if I don't know what mistake I have made.

    Anyway to fix this?

    Thanks,

    Cassandra

I don't have any other ideas, but I suggest running this job with the same data on another system - perhaps on Windows - to see if you get a more helpful error message. The connect error message suggests that the backend SPSS process, which actuallyl runs on the same computer, may have aborted, but we don't know why.
