As IBM partner who develops the only zero-trust security software for AIX, how can we get access to AIX ISOs?

We need the ISOs of AIX 7.3 or newer to be run as a VM on a Windows laptop to show others that only our software can give zero-trusted functions for info security to make info on the systems way more secure than others.

    Roger,

Remember, AIX can run on IBM Power boxes, not on x86 systems or x86 VMs.

You can use Power Virtual Server on IBM Cloud and run AIX in minutes.

    Good luck

    Hi Diego,

Thanks for the reply, but we want to use qemu to run AIX on Windows laptop so that when customers want to see how our software can make info more secure on AIX, we can start the qemu AIX to show them.

Sorry, but that is not possible.

You need an IBM Power box to run AIX. On the road you can use a VPN or ssh to get into your system, but qemu is not an option. (There is a limited and useless hack, nothing you can show to your customers)

Why not possible? I have seen some people run AIX 7.2 on qemu.

    Dear Roger

I did a Google search with "qemu aix intel" and found that you can follow the instruction on how to do this from this Wordpress blog post :  Run AIX 7.2 on x86 with QEMU at  https://kwakousys.wordpress.com/2020/09/06/run-aix-7-2-on-x86-with-qemu/

You can download AIX ISO image from IBM ESS (Entitlement System Support) as described in the post.  But you need to create a user ID first to use the web site and this is free of charge.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that qemu use Emulation to run PowerPC code of AIX on Intel box.  This can mean there is a performance overhead which may contribute to undesirable AIX run-time performance.  You should make sure you have an Intel box with handsome HW performance for your endeavor and I wish you good luck with it  :-)

P.S.  I you have a roadblock that prevents you from downloading AIX 7.3 ISO image, I can try doing it for you but it will take time and I can upload it to Google Drive only.

I have just finished downloading all the install image files of AIX 7.3 - a total of 25GB in size.   If you want it, I can upload it to my Google drive but it must be on another day as I'm near my bedtime now.

Thanks a lot, Satid. Yes my request to the IBM ESS is rejected and redirected to the partner support, and I'm not sure whether the partner support can solve the problem for me or not. So, please send me the Google Drive download links.

    Thanks!!!

    Dear Roger

After a 4-hour upload, here is the link for you to do the download : xxxxxxxx     There is a limitation on my Google drive space and 2 files cannot be uploaded but I think they are not needed.   Please download the files ASAP and I will delete them after 2 days pass.

    Dear Satid,

Thanks for your great help. I have downloaded the 2 files, but to make sure the download is ok, could you help me again to check whether the following cksum looks good:

    [root@fc31 dld]# cksum AIX_v7.3_Install_7300-01-02-2319_DVD_1_of_2_042023_LCD8265103.iso
    826367142 4187193344 AIX_v7.3_Install_7300-01-02-2319_DVD_1_of_2_042023_LCD8265103.iso

    [root@fc31 dld]# cksum AIX_v7.3_Install_7300-01-02-2319_DVD_2_of_2_042023_LCD8265203.iso
    1844068610 4215209984 AIX_v7.3_Install_7300-01-02-2319_DVD_2_of_2_042023_LCD8265203.iso

If the cksum numbers look good, then I'm all ok, you can delete the files from Google Drive.

    Really appreciate your help.

    Dear Roger

I always download files from IBM sites using IBM Download Manager utility which always ensures data integrity of all downloads.   I used it many times in the past and it has been very consistently reliable to my experience.

But on second thought, I have no idea if Google Drive upload ensures upload data integrity or not.  I also have no idea what tool available in Windows 11 I can use to produce the checksum you asked for.  I have no AIX for use as I'm an IBM i specialist.  Can you suggest a tool in WIndows 11 I can use to see the checksum?

I tried the 7.3 AIX on the qemu, but unfortunately, it doesn't work as expected, it will hang at the 0>. Before that I can see the "Press "s" to enter Open Firmware.", but when I pressed the 's' key, it still continued to the '0 >'  and hung.

Trying to load:  from: /vdevice/v-scsi@71000003/disk@8200000000000000: ...   Successfully loaded

    W3411: Client application returned.

E3406: Client application returned an error.

Type 'boot' and press return to continue booting the system.
Type 'reset-all' and press return to reboot the system.

    Ready!

You may want to check QEMU project page at GITLAB web site on its records of opened and closed issues at  https://gitlab.com/qemu-project/qemu/-/issues/?sort=created_date&state=all&first_page_size=100

Do a text search with "aix" and you will find some issues, including this one :  IBM AIX 73 not supported under QEMU Open Issue created 6 months ago by Vincencio Michaelis at  https://gitlab.com/qemu-project/qemu/-/issues/1501

Thanks, Satid. You are the most helpful person in IBM I have met.

It seems the qemu support for AIX is still not ready, still have a long way to go.

I'm using qemu a lot, for Linux on s390x, powerpc, riscv64, mips, arm, we use qemu for the software development and testing. The qemu powerpc linux has been working for many years, just don't understand why AIX on powerpc qemu is still so far away from ready.

    Hi Roger,

AIX has a tight integration with IBM Power hardware, and Linux on Power can run even on OEM boxes or cheaper IBM Power processor boxes. Besides AIX is unsupported, there are some license restrictions to run outside IBM Power.

If you are an IBM Business Partner (ISV), I suggest to check IBM Cloud credits for BPs and the IBM Tech Zone. The last one is a free service for IBM BPs.

    Good luck

    >>>  Thanks, Satid. You are the most helpful person in IBM I have met.  <<<<

After working with IBM for 31 years, I had a mandatory retirement in January last year. So, I'm no longer an IBMer and I now work with a local system integrator for a customer that run IBM i.
