  • 1.  Are there any IBM tools which can help in migration of IMS DB to RDBMS DB and IMS to cloud RDBMS?

We are trying to migrate from IMS(hierarchal database) to an RDBMS DB. Can you please help us on the best tools in IBM that would help us with this?

    1. IMS(on-premise) to RDBMS(on-premise)
    2. IMS(on-premise) to RDBMS(cloud)

Hi,   for on-premise IBM system,   Db2 for z/OS is the target choice for IMS migration.   This is a fairly common task.   There are multiple ways to accomplish this type of migration.   I would be happy to discussion the options available in more detail.   At a high level, the choices are, do it in house or use a vendor(there are a few) to do the migration.   It is imperative to focus on performance during this type of migration.   IMS performs differently than Db2 for z/OS.   This must be taken into account during DB migration when switching across different DB technologies.

All i can say is for IMS (on-premise) to RDBMS (on-premise):

IBM IMS Database Conversion Facility for z/OS (IMS DCF):

      • Purpose-built tool for migrating IMS databases to relational databases.
      • Supports various target RDBMS platforms on-premise, such as IBM Db2, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and others.
      • Provides automation and flexibility for extracting and transforming data from IMS to RDBMS.
      • Optimized for IMS database structures and relationships.

and for IMS (on-premise) to RDBMS (cloud):

IBM IMS Database Conversion Facility for z/OS (IMS DCF):

      • IMS DCF can also be utilized for migrating IMS databases to cloud-based RDBMS.
      • It supports cloud-based RDBMS platforms, such as IBM Db2 on Cloud, Amazon RDS, Microsoft Azure SQL Database, and others.
      • IMS DCF can handle the extraction, transformation, and loading of IMS data to the cloud-based RDBMS.
      • IBM InfoSphere DataStage:
        • DataStage is a comprehensive data integration and ETL tool that supports migrating data from various sources to on-premise or cloud-based RDBMS.
        • It provides connectivity to IMS databases and a wide range of RDBMS systems.
        • DataStage offers flexibility in data transformation, mapping, and loading processes.
        • It supports cloud-based RDBMS platforms, allowing you to migrate IMS data to cloud databases.

I do not know if any tool. But I would suggest starting using a ER diagraming tool like toad, power designer, Erwin, etc. Model for at these third normal form. When moving from IMS to DB2 most will convert each IMS parent/child/grandchild into a db2 table for each. This method can be used to quickly move to DB2 and require the these amount of coding changes, however it is no optimal for performance which is way modeling for ER diagram at 3rd normal form is required for best performance.

Did you try raincode for migrating IMS database to cloud?
